A circular walk past the Bergerie d’Autignac, at the edge of the escarpment above Soubès.
View towards Soubes
The forecast for Thursday is rather uncertain, with Meteo France expecting showers all day, and the BBC saying that overnight rain will have passed by the morning.
Jonquils at Bergerie d’Autignac
If the weather is OK we will undertake this circular walk on the edge of the plateau above Soubès. This is an area with lots of wild flowers. In a couple of weeks the asphodels and iris will appear, followed by orchids, but the daffodils (Jonquils) are already in flower. There are excellent views at various points round the walk, past Soubès to Lodève, and down to Gourgas.
The walk is about 7 km, all on good tracks, but more than half is uphill, usually quite gentle. We will stop for a snack when we get to the upper level of the walk (about two thirds of the way round).
To get to the starting point for this walk we need to drive about 3 km on a dirt road from Soubès. The road quality if generally good, but it is steep and precipitous in places, not for the faint-hearted, weak suspension or flagging engines. I suggest that all drivers meet in Lodève so that we can go in convoy to the start.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 09:50, ready to leave at 10:00. We should be back in Lodève by 14:00.
Distance: ~7 km
A circular walk climbing to the TV mast at the top of the Vinas hill
The forecast for this week is that it will be very cloudy on Thursday with a chance of light rain, but this is unlikely to deter us from a walk.
We propose a walk that we have done before, though not for several years. It is about 6 km long and rises 200 m, mostly on quiet roads, and then returns by country paths along a GR route. We start in Soubes and climb up to the top of the hill near the hamlet of Vinas from which there are excellent views over Lodève.
As usual we will meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, for at 10:00 departure. The walk will start from the lower car park in Soubes at about 10:15, and we should be back in Lodève by 13:00.
This is the long walk postponed from last week because of a competing event. The weather looks good this week, so the walk in on the agenda again.
It is an all-day circular walk of at least 15km, with a substantial climb at the beginning and some challenging sections in the middle.
It starts at Pegairolles, and then climbs by a good, steep path up to the plateau, a hard climb of about 450m. It then follows a little-used path with some wooded and some rocky sections as far as Camp Rouch – this includes a section along a narrow path at the top of a steep cliff, with spectacular views down into the Lergue valley – see photos.
We then take the GR south, eventually descending nearly into Soubes, before returning to Pegairolles by the field tracks to the East of the motorway.
As usual we shall meet by the Luteva cinema at 9:50 for departure at 10:00. This is a long and challenging walk, so come well prepared and equipped, with lunch. We should be back in Lodeve by 16:00.
