This week we will walk the streets and paths around Lunas, including the ascent to the Virgin statue, from where there are excellent views down the Gravezon valley.
This is a short walk around the back streets and paths in Lunas, including the steep climb up the the remains of the old castle, overlooking the town. The descent is by a gentler path, visiting the ruined chapel of St George. It is forecast to be sunny but not too hot, though with strong winds.
We will meet at 8:50, outside the Luteva Cinema, ready for departure at 9:00. The walk will start from the bridge over the river near the church in Lunas, at about 9:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30, but as the walk is short there will be time to stop for a coffee in Lunas. There are also two restaurants offering lunch on a terrace overlooking the river, for anyone who would like to seize that opportunity.
Distance: ~ 4 km, climb ~ 70 m
This walk is largely flat, but a little longer than usual, at about 7 km. More than half is on metalled roads, with light traffic, the rest on tracks.
The forecast for this week is that by Thursday it will be less cold and windy than of late, though it will be cloudy.
We propose an easy but longer walk this week, starting at Lunas. We walk along the road on the south side of the river all the way to Le Pont d’Orb. This is now the route of the GR, and is a good (flat) road with light traffic. After crossing the river we head back to Lunas, briefly along the main road (about 300 m) before turning onto a track (the old GR route). This rises about 50 m before levelling out and bringing us back to Lunas, giving good views across the river.
As usual we shall meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The walk will start from the bridge in Lunas at about 10:20, and we should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
Distance: ~7 km.
This is a moderately easy walk of about 4 km. It includes a long but gentle climb and returns beside the Gravezon river.
This walk starts in the centre of Lunas and the first 2 km are a long but gentle climb, rising about 100 m, to the Col de Peyrolls. Initially this is a concrete road (with good views down to the town), then an old Mule path, which is often very stony (so good shoes are recommended), but is never steep. At the top we join a good forest track for the gentle descent (with views across to Le Bousquet), and the last part of the circuit is a flat path beside the river.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The walk will start at about 10:30 from the main bridge in Lunas (next to the Chateau) – parking is generally easy in the town or beside the river. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
Distance: ~4 km, climb 100 m
Bring: good footwear
A peaceful sunny there and back walk for a Thursday morning, following the minor road from Lunas to Laval de Nize. The chapel at Laval de Nize is by the stream – an ideal place for a summer picnic.
On the way we passed the Fontaine des Yeux. The water there is said to be good for the eyes, the idea being to dip your handkerchief in the water and then leave it hanging there. Unfortunately we only had tissues.
Distance: 9 km
Details of the walk can be found here
Lavel de Nize is at the start of another walk which follows the Nize and climbs up through the forest, returning by the village of Briandes. To be done when there is less water about!
