Circular walk looking for mushrooms
It looks as though we shall escape any rain on Thursday, and with a few warm days after the rain at the weekend there is a good chance that mushrooms will be sprouting. So it is the time of year to do our mushroom walk from La Couvertoirade.
This is a circular walk of about 7km, on stony tracks and paths, mostly gentle, but with a total climb of about 100m.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 ready to depart at 10:00. The walk will start from the car park at La Couvertoirade, at about 10:30. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.
This week I propose a walk around La Couvertoirade. This will be based on the walk that we often do in the autumn, looking for mushrooms. We will not find those at this time of year, but we should find various flowers, particularly with all the rain this year.
The walk is on tracks and paths that are often stony, but not difficult. It has the usual ups and downs, but no serious climbs. It may be a bit damp underfoot in various places, but the forecast is for veiled sun, with temperatures around 20 degrees, and a moderate wind from the south. Total distance is a bit under 6km.
As usual we will meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for a 10:00 departure. The walk will start from the car park at La Couvertoirade at about 10:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.
This walk starts at La Couvertoirade, leaving to the South on the GR towards Le Cros, then cuts West to return by the GR71 from Le Caylar. We did this walk at the same time last year (2014), and for the same reason – to look for mushrooms! Last year we found numerous sorts – this year the large brown mushrooms were quite easy to find (see picture, edible, though not particularly tasty – best in soup, perhaps), and we found a few field mushrooms (rose des prets) and yellow ceps.
This is a generally easy walk of about 7km on tracks and paths, with a moderate amount of up and down throughout. Part of the return is on a narrower, rocky path that can be a little difficult.
