27 September 2018 – Les Rives

2016-03-24 11-05-14This is a circular walk on the plateau to the west of Les Rives.

The walk is quite long, about 8 km, but quite easy, all on country roads and good tracks. It is mostly level, with a few rolling sections, and a total climb of about 50m. The terrain is varied, with open views across fields and the more distant plateau, and wooded and scrubby sections. The forecast is for mostly full sun, but with a continuation of the recent lower air temperatures, and not much wind.

As usual, we will meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to set off at 10:00. The walk will start at 10:30 from the parking area in Les Rives. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:00.

Leader: Andrew
Distance: 8 km
Bring: Snack, sun protection.

20 September 2018 – Les Grésals

This is a relatively easy walk of about 5 km on the Escandorgue plateau in an area called Les Gresals, near Les Sieges.

2014-11-20-11-30-52.jpg

This is a walk on tracks and paths on an open area of the plateau. Much of the walk is quite flat, and there are no steep climbs or descents. The surface is generally good, though there is one short cross-country section in the middle.

The forecast for Thursday is good, with less cloud than for the last few days. It should start cool, but may get hot towards the end of the morning, and there is very little shade on this walk.

As usual we shall meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The starting point is on the D151, about 500 m beyond Les Sieges, on the road to the Grotte de Labeil. There is a track on the right, with room for cars to park. The walk will start at about 10:40, and we should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.

Distance: ~ 5 km

30 August 2018 – Lunas

This week we will walk the streets and paths around Lunas, including the ascent to the Virgin statue, from where there are excellent views down the Gravezon valley.

2018-02-15 12-33-22 c

This is a short walk around the back streets and paths in Lunas, including the steep climb up the the remains of the old castle, overlooking the town. The descent is by a gentler path, visiting the ruined chapel of St George. It is forecast to be sunny but not too hot, though with strong winds.

We will meet at 8:50, outside the Luteva Cinema, ready for departure at 9:00. The walk will start from the bridge over the river near the church in Lunas, at about 9:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30, but as the walk is short there will be time to stop for a coffee in Lunas. There are also two restaurants offering lunch on a terrace overlooking the river, for anyone who would like to seize that opportunity.

Distance: ~ 4 km, climb ~ 70 m

21 June 2018 – Le Caylar and Roc Castel

This week we propose a relatively short and easy walk from Le Caylar, followed by the opportunity to climb to the top of the Roc Castel.2014-11-13-12-14-09.jpg

From Le Caylar we set off in the direction of Le Cros, and then make a loop to return by a different path – we have done most of this walk on various previous occasions. It is largely flat, though stony underfoot in some sections. We should get back to Le Caylar early enough for those of a more sporting disposition to do the climb up to the top of the Roc Castel, behind the town. There is a good path all the way up, and the view from the top is excellent!

It is forecast to be sunny this week, with the wind having dropped, so be prepared for a hot day.

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. We walk will start from the car park beside the church (at the eastern end of the town) at about 10:30. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.

14 June 2018 – Portiragnes Plage

This is a circular walk of about 9 km, all at sea-level, involving the beach, a nature reserve in marsh-land, and the Canal du Midi.

The walk this week will start at Portiragnes Plage, led by Ben, with bird-watching opportunities. The first part of the walk is along the beach, then on to a path leading through a nature reserve, where there will be good chance of seeing some interesting water or wading birds. The next leg is along the Canal du Midi, with the canal on one side and marshes on the other, then back through the reserve before meeting the original path to retrace our steps to the start. It’s all flat and easy walking. Bring binoculars if you are interested in watching the birds.

As this is a fairly long walk, and a long way away, we will stop for a snack in the middle. The weather is forecast to be warm and mostly sunny, with some wind.

Dogs are permitted on this walk but must be kept on a lead when within the nature reserve.

As usual we shall meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk itself will start from the Tourist Office in Portiragnes Plage at about 11:00. To get there directly take the D612 (either from the A75 or from Vias past the airport), then the D37 past Portiragnes. At Portiragnes Plages turn right at the roundabout decorated with flamingos, direction Plage Ouest. At the next junction, go straight ahead towards Plage Est. The tourist office is just along there, set back on the right, with plenty of space for parking. We should be back in Lodeve by 16:00.

Distance: 9 km
Bring: Snack, Binoculars

31 May 2018 – Orchids on the Guilhaumard

This week we will do our annual orchid outing, to the Guilhaumard plateau near La Pezade. This is turning our to be a very good year for flowers, so there should be lots of orchids to spot and identify. As a result, the overall amount of walking will be quite limited, only a few kilometers, more of a wander than a walk.

The current weather forecast suggests the possibility of showers in the morning, though warm with some moderate wind. If this should change significantly we will post a postponement or other revision of the plan!

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, for departure at 10:00. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.

Leader: Andrew.
Distance: 2-3 km.
Bring: Flower books, magnifying glass.

3 May 2018 – Wild flowers on the Guilhaumard

This week we will do the walk on the southern edge of the Guilhaumard plateau (as most years), where there is a good range of wild flowers. With luck we will see Daffodils, Tulips, Fritillaires, Pasque flowers, perhaps La Dame a Onze Heures, and more early orchids.

2004_0515BCThis is a walk of about 7 km, mostly flat though with one short climb in the middle. The first 2 km section is on a quiet road, and the rest on tracks and footpaths, occasionally stony. This area has few pine trees, so processionnaire caterpillars should not be a problem. The forecast is for a windy day with some cloud, not a hot day!

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk itself will start at about 10:40, from a parking area at La Frayssinede, at the beginning of the road that leads from the D493 towards Mas Reynal and Canals. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:00.

Leader: Andrew
Distance: 7 km, climb 50 m
