14 February 2019 – Octon to Salagou

2016-03-31 12-34-15This is a circular walk from Octon over to Lake Salagou. The walk is generally flat, about 7 km, and all on tracks and quiet roads. There are often some water birds of interest at the lake, so bring your binoculars.

As usual we shall meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk will start from the main square in Octon at about 10:20. We should be back in Lodève by 13:30. However, in Octon there is usually the option to stop for lunch in the bar – we shall decide about that before we set off on the walk.

Advance Notice: If the weather remains as forecast then next week I plan to do the Cirque du Bout du Monde walk from Gourgas. We have talked about this walk often before but never undertaken it as a group. It is about 9 km, climbing more than 500 m and does a circuit around the bottom of the cliffs above Gourgas – if is officially classed at Moyen difficulty, with quite steep climbs and descents, and a long section along a narrow footpath below the cliffs.

24 January 2019 – Tressan

This is an easy circular walk of about 6 km, through fields and vineyards to Puilacher.

It is about four years since we last did a walk from the village of Tressan. Starting in the hill-top town (only a small hill) we walk down to the fields on the old flood-plain of the Hérault, then through fields and vineyards (on good tracks) to the neighbouring village of Puilacher. We return along a path at the top of the slope that leads down to the plain, and return to Tressan past the cemetery, a total of about 6 km.  2015-01-01 10-15-21.JPG

The forecast for Thursday is that it will be cold (near freezing overnight) and quite windy, though with some sunshine. Be prepared.

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 ready to leave at 10:00. The walk will start from near the Mairie in Tressan, at about 10:30. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.

A walk from St. Jean de la Blaquiere to Les Salces

I tried to lead this walk in 2015 only to find that the river was blocked just South of Les Salces so we had to turn back.  So fingers crossed for this time.  We shall start out from the main square in St. Jean and follow the Ruisseau de Ste. Marguerite to Les Salces and return via the Bruyeres des Salces. It is an undulating walk over chemins and vineyard paths. The weather is forecast to be dry with some wind and this walk, much of which is through vines and trees is not too exposed. It is between 9 and 10 km so we should arrive back in St. Jean by 1.30 and at Luteva by 2.00. (If necessary it can be shortened.)

The meeting place will be at Luteva at 9:50 for a 10.00 start. For those meeting in the main square in St. Jean, the walk will start at 10.30.

A Walk Around Octon

We shall set off from Octon passing the ruins of “le chateau de Lauziere”, and on to “le chapelle de Roubignac, (12me siecle). The walk is a loop of about 10km, with a climb of maximum 200m on good tracks. On the way back we shall pass the two dolmens de Toucou.

It’s quite a sell known historic walk with beautiful views that, I’m sure , some of you might already have done. It is said to take about 3h 15 mns so we shall set off from the central square in Octon at 10.30 and we should be back in Lodeve at about 14.30.

We shall meet, as usual, in front of Luteva at 9.50. According to the forecast it’s going to be sunny on Thursday but a bit cold in the morning.

A walk from St. Jean de la Blaquiere

The weather forecast is good for tomorrow so I propose a walk to the south east of St. Jean over easy very minor roads and vineyard chemins with  two short stretches on a busier road. We may also visit the donkeys who provide the asses’ milk for the soap that is made and sold in St. Jean!

Meeting as usual at Luteva at 9.50 for a 10.00 departure and the walk will start from the car park in St. Jean at 10.30.

13 December 2018 – Domaine de la Tour

This week we propose an easy walk around the fields close to the Domaine de la Tour, south of Nebian.

This is a walk of between 3 and 5 km (we can decide as we go round) on the tracks south of Nebian. It is mostly flat.

The forecast for Thursday is not good. It should be dry at the start, but there is a high chance that rain will start by the end of the morning, so come prepared. The nature of the walk is that it can be curtailed if necessary.

As usual we shall meet at 9:50 outside the Luteva Cinema, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk will start at about 10:30 from the car park at the Domaine de la Tour. The Domaine is reached by a turning (on the left, with a sign) about 1.5 km south of Nebian on the D609.

15 November 2018 – La Jasse

This is a flat circular walk of about 7 km on the plateau above Millau.

The damp weather is forecast to continue for a few more days, but rain is less likely further north on the plateau. So we propose to repeat this walk, in the area just south of Millau, where it will probably be overcast but with little risk of rain. We often see vultures in this area, though that is less likely with low cloud.

This walk is mostly on level tracks and quiet roads on the plateau, but reaches the edge of the escarpment, with views down to the Tarn valley and Millau, and across to the Millau Bridge. At the escarpment there is a short uphill section on a stony path which may be a little difficult after the recent rain. Other sections may be a bit muddy.2017-11-23 11-26-43.JPG

As usual we shall meet outside the Lodeve Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The forecast for Millau is better than for Lodeve, so we will leave even if it is raining in Lodeve. The walk itself will start at about 10:50 from the Maison du Larzac (also known as La Jasse), on the D809 road from the motorway to Millau. Access is via a slip-road on the right (with a sign-post) and then through a narrow tunnel under the dual carriageway.
