A long, circular walk of at least 12 km on roads, tracks and paths to the west of Cabrières.
This is a long circuit from Cabrières, on a mixture of paths, tracks and roads. None of it is particularly hard, but it is a long walk, particularly in the heat. We leave the village by the D124E4 and ascend, following the valley of the Ruisseau des Caviès, pass the ruins of the Cabrières chateau and then continue up the valley along the road to Les Crozes. From the village we take to tracks and paths, eventually descending by a wooded valley to the hamlet of Lauriol. From here the return takes us past the Domaine du Temple and back up to the chateau ruins before retracing our path to Cabrières. The total walk is at least 12 km. The climbing is modest, about 250 m all told, though there is the option of a steep ascent up to the chateau for the view.
The forecast for this week is that it will continue to be quite hot, and mostly sunny, though windy and with cloud increasing in the afternoon. Much of the walk is quite exposed, so it is important to bring good protection from the sun and lots of water.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 08:50 ready to leave at 9:00. The walk will start at about 9:40, from near the Marie in Cabrières. There are parking places along most of the main road through the village, all the way to the Cave Cooperative (which is just after the Marie). We should be back in Lodeve by 16:00.
Distance: > 12 km
Climb: ~250 m
Bring: Sun protection, water, good snack
This week we propose the easy walk up the Lergue valley from Pegairolles, as far as the waterfalls, a total of about 5 km. The walk is mostly flat, but it does involve a short, steep climb at one point, and the ascent of a ladder! Starting from near the cemetery at Pegairolles, we walk up beside the river to an area with lots of small waterfalls and a weir. The return will either be by the same route, or along a track a little further up the hillside.
The weather is expected to be mostly sunny, and quite hot with not much wind. Parts of the walk are shaded, but most is exposed to the sun.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 8:50, ready to leave at 9:00. The walk will start from the parking area by the cemetery, just north of the village, at about 9:20. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30.
Distance: ~ 5 km
This week we propose a relatively level walk of about 6 km in the forest area south of Les Salces. We have done this walk several times over the years.
The walk is all on forest tracks, is relatively easy, and is mostly shaded. The first part rises gently over several km, with a few steeper sections, and at the end we have views towards St. Jean de la Blaquiere and across the Lergue valley. The return descends gently to the Marguerite river valley before a final ascent back to Les Salces.
The forecast for Thursday is for the hot weather to continue, mostly full sun, and some breeze.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 8:50, ready to depart at 9:00. The walk will start from the car park in Les Salces at about 9:30. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
Distance: ~6 km, climbing about 100 m in total
Bring: Water, sun protection.
This is a relatively easy walk across the plateau east of St Michel, a small village to the east of Le Caylar. The walk is about 6 km, with 100 m of climbing along undulating footpaths, tracks and country roads. There may be some spring flowers, but the main objective is to visit a Chapel, a Dolmen and a Puit.
This week the weather is expected to be warm and mostly sunny, though probably rather windy. We propose a circular walk in the area to the east of St Michel, on tracks, paths and country roads, about 6 km and gently rising about 100 m. We will visit the Chapel of St-Genès, the Dolmen des Peyrières and the Puits de Conques.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The starting point for the walk is on the D152, about 2 km beyond St Michel, where there is a wide flat area on the left of the road, after the Puits and just before a fork to Les Camboulles. We should start at about 10:40, and be back in Lodeve by 14:00.
Distance: ~ 6 km, 100 m climb
This is a moderately easy walk of about 4 km. It includes a long but gentle climb and returns beside the Gravezon river.
This walk starts in the centre of Lunas and the first 2 km are a long but gentle climb, rising about 100 m, to the Col de Peyrolls. Initially this is a concrete road (with good views down to the town), then an old Mule path, which is often very stony (so good shoes are recommended), but is never steep. At the top we join a good forest track for the gentle descent (with views across to Le Bousquet), and the last part of the circuit is a flat path beside the river.
The weather is expected to be warm and mostly sunny, with not much wind.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The walk will start at about 10:30 from the main bridge in Lunas (next to the Chateau and the church) – parking is generally easy in the town or beside the river. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00, though it is usually possible to find lunch in Lunas for those so inclined.
Distance: ~4 km, climb 100 m
Bring: good footwear
This week we propose a circular walk from the small village of Brenas in the upper Salagou valley. This rather wild area is interesting from both geological (ruffes) and wildlife perspectives.
The walk is about 7 km, on a combination of paths, tracks and quiet roads, and is never flat. The first part descends to the Salagou river and then we return back up to Brenas, a total ascent of about 250 m, relentless but rarely steep and never difficult.
The forecast for Thursday is that it will be mostly sunny and quiet warm, with moderate wind. There is very little shade on this walk, so come prepared.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk itself will start from the parking area near the church in Brenas, at about 10:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:30.
Distance: 7 km, 250 m climb
Bring: Water, sun protection, refreshment
This week we will do our annual orchid outing, to the Guilhaumard plateau near La Pezade. As last year, the long cool spring has encouraged the growth of flowers, so there should be lots of orchids to spot and identify, as well as other wild flowers. The overall amount of walking will be quite limited, only a few kilometers, more of a wander than a walk.
The current weather forecast is that it will be mostly sunny and reasonably warm with light winds.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, for departure at 10:00. The walk will start at about 10:40 from the point on the D140, about 1 km beyond la Pezade, where the GR crosses the road. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
Distance: ~3 km.
Bring: Flower books, magnifying glass.
