30 August 2018 – Lunas

This week we will walk the streets and paths around Lunas, including the ascent to the Virgin statue, from where there are excellent views down the Gravezon valley.

This is a short walk around the back streets and paths in Lunas, including the steep climb up the the remains of the old castle, overlooking the town. The descent is by a gentler path, visiting the ruined chapel of St George. It is forecast to be sunny but not too hot, though with strong winds.

We will meet at 8:50, outside the Luteva Cinema, ready for departure at 9:00. The walk will start from the bridge over the river near the church in Lunas, at about 9:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30, but as the walk is short there will be time to stop for a coffee in Lunas. There are also two restaurants offering lunch on a terrace overlooking the river, for anyone who would like to seize that opportunity.

23 August 2018 – Les Rives to Lergue Valley

The walk this week is a part of a marked walk from Les Rives – we will walk to the Lergue valley and down to a waterfall and then return with a loop through hay fields.

This walk is another section of the marked circuit between Les Rives and St Felix de l’Heras. For this section we start at Les Rives and descend to the Lergue valley, and will walk down-river to a waterfall (the end of the other walk).

For the return we ascend by farm tracks to the hay meadows, then half a km along a quiet road before rejoining the outgoing path. The overall distance is about 7 km, partly flat, but with a significant climb between Les Rives and the river. The paths and tracks are generally in good condition, though there are some sections that are quite steep. There is a lot of shade, but also several sections that are completely exposed. The forecast for Thursday is for full sun, with only a little breeze in mitigation, so come prepared.

At present there are lots of butterflies around, so we should see various whites, browns, blues, yellows, several fritillaires, southern white admirals, and possibly even a dryad. Bring your butterfly books!

We will meet at 8:50, outside the Luteva Cinema, ready for departure at 9:00. The walk will start from the parking area in Les Rives, at about 9:30. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30.

16 August 2018 – Upper Lergue Valley

The walk this week will be relatively short, mostly flat and often shaded. It is a short part of a marked circular walk from St. Felix de l’Heras – we will walk up the Lergue valley to a waterfall and then return by the same route. 2018-08-12 14-04-27

The first km of this walk is a long gentle descent from the main road to the Lergue river. The path is not steep but it is often stony, with tree roots to add to the difficulties underfoot. Once at the river we follow the riverside path through meadows and fields of wildflowers for about 1.5 km, to a waterfall. The return is by the same route.

The walk will start on the D155, at a sign post about 500 m from St Felix going towards Les Rives, at about 9:30. There is a parking area a few hundred meters further on. We should be back in Lodeve by 12:30.
