3 May 2018 – Wild flowers on the Guilhaumard

This week we will do the walk on the southern edge of the Guilhaumard plateau (as most years), where there is a good range of wild flowers. With luck we will see Daffodils, Tulips, Fritillaires, Pasque flowers, perhaps La Dame a Onze Heures, and more early orchids.

2004_0515BCThis is a walk of about 7 km, mostly flat though with one short climb in the middle. The first 2 km section is on a quiet road, and the rest on tracks and footpaths, occasionally stony. This area has few pine trees, so processionnaire caterpillars should not be a problem. The forecast is for a windy day with some cloud, not a hot day!

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk itself will start at about 10:40, from a parking area at La Frayssinede, at the beginning of the road that leads from the D493 towards Mas Reynal and Canals. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:00.

Leader: Andrew
Distance: 7 km, climb 50 m

Walks for May

The following walks are planned for the next few weeks. As always, plans may change, depending on availability and weather!

  • 3rd May – Wild flowers on the Guihaumard. This is the walk starting near La Bastide des Fonts, that we have done regularly in recent years. It often reveals a good display of early wild flowers.
  • 10th May – Ben will lead a walk on Mont Liausson.
  • 17th May – Dorine will lead a walk, as yet unspecified.
  • 24th May – Not yet decided. Any suggestions for a walk on this date will be welcome.
  • 31st May – Orchids on the Guihaumard. Our annual outing in the area of Canals, famous for the range of orchids that can be found.

We are always looking for new walks, so if you have a favourite that you would like to propose for the group, just let me know – send a message to AJWalkers {at} Westlakes.org.uk.

26 April 2018 – Cantercel

2016-04-14-11-28-23.jpg

With the arrival of Spring, it is time to go looking for wild flowers. This week we will visit the Cantercel area, above La Vacquerie, which is one of the best places for jonquils. Also, the asphodels are starting to flower, and there is a good chance to see wild irises and some early orchids.

This is a fairly long walk of about 8 km, rising a total of about 150 m. Most is on tracks (some loose and stony) or on footpaths. The higher levels give excellent views across to Mont St Baudile to the south and Navacelles to the north.

Dog owners, take note: there are lots of Austrian Pines in this area and is very likely that there will be processionnaire caterpillars on the move.

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk itself will start from the reservoir above La Vacquerie at about 10:45. To get to this point you drive through the village (on the D9 towards Arboras) and up the hill. Immediately after the top of the hill there is a small turning sharply back on the right, with a no-through-road sign, and the parking point is 100 m up this road. If you get to the hamlet of La Trivalle (on the D9), you have missed the turning!

This is a fairly long walk, so bring a snack. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:30.

12 April 2018 – Les Plans, or Rain!

The weather forecasts this week are conflicting. It seems most likely that it will be wet, in which case there will be no walk. However, if the heavy rain of Wednesday has cleared up by Thursday morning, we will do a short walk from Les Plans.

This is a short walk of about 4 km, starting from the car park in Les Plans. It proceeds out of the village up the Soulondres valley, then returns by a higher path. Overall it climbs about 100 m, though is never really steep.

If it is not raining we will meet as usual at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to start at 10:00. The walk will start from the car park in Les Plans at about 10:15.

5 April 2018 – St Michel

2013-06-20 10-45-54.JPG

This is a relatively easy walk across the plateau, starting at St Michel, a small village to the east of Le Caylar. The walk is about 6 km, along undulating footpaths, tracks and country roads. It is probably still too early for many spring flowers, but we may get to see a Dolmen and a Puit.

This week the weather is expected to be warm and mostly sunny, though rather windy. We propose a circular walk along the valley to the east of St Michel, going out along a hillside footpath (which may be a bit muddy after recent rain) and returning mostly along a quiet country road. At the far end of the walk we will visit the Puits de Conques, and it will be possible to climb up to the Dolmen des peyrières.

As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The walk itself will start from the parking area behind the church in St Michel at about 10:45. We should be back in Lodeve by about 13:30. The village is about 6 km from Le Caylar, along a turning (D152) off the D9 towards St Pierre de la Fage.

Distance: ~ 6 km

10 April 2018 – Walkers Lunch

With the return of spring we are proposing a lunch outing, on Tuesday 10th April, to the Auberge du Lac, overlooking Lake Salagou. They do an excellent lunch menu (entree et plat plus glass of wine and coffee) for €18 – dessert and/or aperitif are extra! The restaurant says that there is always a vegetarian option on the menu, but we think this might be fish rather than pure veggie. Let me know if this is important for you.

If you would like to come you MUST send me an e-mail, directly to AJWalkers {at} Westlakes.org.uk – do NOT hit reply to this message or send a comment to the walkers site, as these may not reach me. Please let me know as soon as possible, and at the very latest by the morning of Thursday 5th April, if you want to be included.

The lunch reservation will be for 12:30, and we will organise co-voiturage from the Luteva Cinema at 12:00 for those without personal transport.

Bon appetit, Andrew
