A short circular walk starting in St. Guiraud and climbing to the ridge behind the village
The forecast is good this week, so we will do the walk originally proposed for last week. The walk is about 5 km and is on paths and tracks, uphill for all the first half (climbing gently about 100m) then with a slightly steeper descent. In some places the paths are a bit stony and loose, so good shoes and sticks are in order. The upper parts of the walk give good views across both the Herault and the Lergue valleys.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for departure at 10:00. The walk will start at about 10:20 from the Place de la Mairie in St Guiraud. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
It seems likely that the weather will defeat us this week, but if the rain has stopped by Thursday morning we will undertake a circular walk starting in St. Guiraud and encompassing the ridge behind the village.
The walk is about 5 km and is on paths and tracks, not flat but with no hard climbs.
As usual we shall meet (if dry) outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for departure at 10:00.
A short but steep walk to the North of St Guilhem
This is a short (6.5km) but strenuous walk with climbs totalling about 300m, mostly on footpaths that are by turns steep, narrow, stony and precipitous, sometimes all at the same time. It starts beside the Herault river, and climbs via the Combe de Legeaux towards the hamlet of l’Estagnol, then returns by the Combe Bugadière to the start.
The weather this Thursday is expected to be clear (~15°) and not particularly windy, so should not present any problems, but in places the path is over loose stones, so adequate footwear is important.
The walk starts at a car park on the D4, about 1.5km beyond St Guilhem – you will see a dam across the river, and the (large) parking area is about 200m further on, round the bend in the road, on the right, between the road and the river.
As usual we will meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. We should start the walk at about 10:50, and be back in Lodève soon after 13:30.
Time: 2 – 2.5 hours
Difficulty: Moyen +
With the cooler weather we will propose a few more strenuous walks over the next few weeks, all with significant climbs. These will probably include:
- Pic de Vissou – this climbs about 200m to the windy peak overlooking Cabrieres.
- L’Estagnol from the Herault Gorge – about 250m climbing on very stony paths.
- Cirque du Bout du Monde – a circuit from Gourgas, led by Jenny.
As usual, any other suggestions for walks are always welcome.
An easy walk in the vineyards between Aniane and Gignac.
This is a circular walk starting at Aniane, all on country roads, mostly very quiet and in good condition. The first part is flat, and there are gentle ups and downs after that, with good views across the upper Hérault valley to the Pont du Diable. The half-way point is at the valley of the ruisseau de Gassac, by the Domaine Gassac-Daumas, and the Chateau de Capion. Parts of the walk are rather exposed, so come prepared for wind. The total distance is about 9.5km.
As usual we shall meet at the Luteva cinema at 9:50 and depart at 10:00. The walk will start from the parking area behind the Boulangerie on the way into Aniane (the same place as the last walk from the town – turn right at the Stop line as you approach the town). We should set off from there at about 10:30, and be back in Lodeve by 14:00.
