This week we will do our annual orchid outing, to the Guilhaumard plateau near La Pezade. This is turning our to be a very good year for flowers, so there should be lots of orchids to spot and identify. As a result, the overall amount of walking will be quite limited, only a few kilometers.
The weather forecast is that it will be dry but quite windy.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, for departure at 10:00.
Distance: 2-3 km.
Bring: Flower books, magnifying glass.
This week I propose a walk around La Couvertoirade. This will be based on the walk that we often do in the autumn, looking for mushrooms. We will not find those at this time of year, but we should find various flowers, particularly with all the rain this year.
The walk is on tracks and paths that are often stony, but not difficult. It has the usual ups and downs, but no serious climbs. It may be a bit damp underfoot in various places, but the forecast is for veiled sun, with temperatures around 20 degrees, and a moderate wind from the south. Total distance is a bit under 6km.
As usual we will meet at the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for a 10:00 departure. The walk will start from the car park at La Couvertoirade at about 10:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:30.
We plan to do the walk we cancelled in March which Marianne and me (Dorine) explored. The walk goes from Luteva to the Chemin des Tines onto the direction of la Défriche (near Villecun). The walk goes up gradually and is not difficult. The descend is rocky (especially after the heavy rain last September) and is not very difficult, except for people with knee problems. In that case we ask Menno to pick up some persons near the Domaine de la Défriche after we will have called him. The walk will be around 7 or 8 km.long. For the shortcutters it will be 5 km, I think.
We would like to invite the walkers to our house for lunch after the walk. So please tell me before Wednesday morning if you like to join for lunch. Please reply in a comment (see down).
After lunch it is a good fifteen minutes walk back to Lodève. But we can always drive some people down to the parking lot in Lodève, if needed.
As usual, we will meet in the car park by the cinema at 9:50, ready to set off at 10:00.
We now expect the rain to have ceased by dawn on Thursday, so I propose a walk around the heights of Lodeve. This is a relatively short walk that we have done several times before.
We start out up the Fontbonne road, then cut across the lower levels of Grezac, eventually reaching the area of La Solitude. From there we take a narrow footpath (which is under trees so may still be wet) before joining the Rue 8 Mai for the return. The walk is about 5 km, and generally easy, though with a steep section at the beginning.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart on foot at 10:00. The walk should finish by 12:00.
Distance: 5 km
Continuing rain forecast
The current forecast is that the persistent rain will continue all week, so no walk is proposed for Thursday.
However, should the weather improve there may be a late announcement of a walk around Lodeve.
The forecast for next week is much better and we expect to do a walk between Belbeze and Villecun.
All-day walk with birdwatching
The forecast for Thursday is that it will be warm and sunny, and the wind will have dropped, so we will undertake the planned walk at the Maison de la Nature, at Lattes. The reserve associated with the site extends over towards the Etang de Mejan, and it’s fresh and salt-water ponds are home to many varieties of birds of all sizes, from warblers to storks, with flamingoes on the Etang.
The reserve is about an hours drive away from Lodeve, so this will be an all-day walk: bring a picnic lunch. And binoculars and bird books!
Dogs are not allowed within the reserve area. There is an area outside the reserve where dogs are allowed on a lead, and it might be possible for part of the walk to be in this area. Anyone who is considering coming with a dog should contact me directly to discuss what the options and arrangements might be.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready for departure at 10:00. To get to the reserve we go to Montpellier, follow signs to Palavas but turn off the D986 into Lattes, then follow the signs to the Maison de la Nature. There is a designated car park about 600 m before the reserve, and we start the walk from there. We should be back in Lodeve by 17:00.
The walk is completely flat, on tracks or boardwalks (no wet feet!). We shall probably walk between 6 and 10 km, depending on what takes our interest.
Distance: 6 – 10 km
Bring: Lunch, binoculars, bird books, sun protection
