Walk on the Guilhaumard Plateau, starting at Mas Reynal
Because it has been so cold and windy this week I have decided to postpone the planned walk to see the storks at Lattes until next week. Instead I propose a brisk walk on the plateau. The forecast for Thursday is that it will be cloudy, but with very little wind, ideal for a good walk.
The walk starts at Mas Reynal, and then follows the GR route along the edge of the escarpment, giving good views down into the Sorgues valley, and across the plateau. We leave the GR at the point where it plunges down into the valley, and continue across the plateau to the road near the junction with the D493. We should see Pasque Flowers and Fritillaries and some early orchids on the walk.
This is not a circular walk, so we will need to organise cars to take drivers back to the starting point.
The walk is about 8km, on paths and tracks that are sometimes quite stony, but never really difficult. It climbs about 100m to the highest point, but goes up and down quite a lot in between. I suggest that you bring a snack to sustain yourself, warm layers (as it may be cold) and good shoes!
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to leave at 10:00. The walk proper will start from Mas Reynal at about 10:40, and we should be back in Lodeve soon after 14:00.
The forecast for next Thursday is not good, but if the rain holds off at least until the afternoon we will do a circular walk from Mas Delon. The walk is about 5 km, over low hills to Rabejac and then returning via Les Hemies. We have done this walk in the past, but not for several years.
There are some beautiful views, south to Lac Salagou, across to Mont St Baudille and north to Lodeve. The walk is largely on wide tracks some of which are paved. There are 2 short ascents of less than 100 m, and one small river to cross on firm, flat stones.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50, ready to depart at 10:00. The walk will start at the bus shelter on the way into Mas Delon (just by Mike and Margaret’s house) at about 10:20. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00, but …
Mike and Margaret would like to offer those who can stay, a light lunch after the walk. Please let us know if you are able to come, either by commenting on this post, or by an e-mail directly to Andrew.
Leaders: Mike and Margaret
This week we will do the walk around Cantercel, above La Vacquerie, visiting the Bergerie de Tedenat, as we do most years. This is a good area to look for wild flowers at various times of the year, and at this time we should find Jonquils and Irises, and perhaps Wild Tulips.
The weather is forecast to be dry and sunny, with little wind, so the sun will probably be hot. The walk is about 7km, on a mixture of tracks and paths, not flat, but without any serious climbing. Don’t forget to bring some refreshment and a snack.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for a start at 10:00. The walk will depart from the parking area at the beginning of the track up to Cantercel from the D9 (between La Vacquerie and the Col du Vent), at about 10:40. We should be back in Lodeve by 14:00.
The forecast for Thursday is good, in that the rain should have finished and it will be sunny, but it will also be windy. We propose a relatively short walk, no more than 5km, starting at the Mairie in St. Etienne de Gourgas. We last did this walk at the beginning of March last year.
The walk is all on quiet country roads, and starts alongside the river, up the valley to Gourgas. From there we return by a rather more hilly road which gives good views across the valley. This leads to St. Etienne le Haut, from where we descend to the starting point.
As usual we shall meet outside the Luteva Cinema at 9:50 for a start at 10:00. The walk will depart from opposite the Mairie in St. Etienne at about 10:20. We should be back in Lodeve by 13:00.
Plans for the next few walks
The following walks are planned for the next few weeks, though not necessarily in the order given – that will depend on the availability of leaders and the weather!
- From St Etienne to Gourgas.
- Cantercel for wild flowers, especially Jonquils and Irises.
- From Nebian towards Domaine de la Tour – Marianne will lead this walk.
- All-day walk around the bird sanctuary at Lattes, for Storks, Egrets, Herons, Flamingoes and other waders.
- Belbeze to La Defriche, followed by lunch chez Dorine and Menno.
- From Nebian up to La Travers, led by Jenny.
- Orchids on the plateau.
